The very beginning goes back to 1968 when a Day Treatment Classroom was opened on the third floor of the Shaver Hospital in St. Catharines. The Niagara Institute for Human Development was incorporated in November 1967 and began operating as the Niagara Child Development Centre in 1968. In the early 1970's, the Niagara community advocated for the establishment of a centre to treat adolescents with mental health problems. The Niagara Centre for Youth Care was established in 1976 and licensed under the Child and Family Services Act in 1977. On April 1, 2004, the Niagara Child Development Centre and the Niagara Centre for Youth Care amalgamated to form Niagara Child and Youth Services. In January 2011 NCYS changed its name to Pathstone Mental Health.
